WELCOME
On behalf of everyone associated with Leaders 4 Life allow me to extend my best wishes as you gain exposure to our program. Obviously this is a very unique development program and one that is long overdue. There are a multitude of opportunities to have players attend camps to help in their physical skill development but until Leaders 4 Life there were very few that took our unique and necessary approach to the leadership development of young athletes.
We in the sports industry are always looking for leaders but they are not easy to find. Leadership is personal, not positional. We’ve always believed that you do not need a letter or title next to your name or be the best player to lead. Leaders are not born they are made and with the right mixture of motivation, practice, feedback and theory our athletes will learn to construct their own “game plan” and develop those transferable life skills that will make a positive difference on their teams and in life. Many participants have credited L4L with helping them develop the personal skills needed to compete at the highest levels of their sport.
Why L4L? The time is right for a program targeted at high school aged student-athletes that can gain the most from learning what it takes to be a leader. Our specialized staff believes you can learn a great deal from individuals and real life leaders who have distinguished themselves through their own accomplishments, their values and their character.
L4L has proven to change lives and empower its athletes in ways they never knew possible. Initially some athletes questioned their need to attend this type of camp until our concepts challenged them in ways they were unaccustomed. Through real life scenarios we expose the athletes to the areas that require immediate attention. Today young adults are more susceptible to the negative influences and temptations that exist and developing the skills set of leaders will help them make good choices, particularly when faced with the wrong decision. Many of these temptations will take place outside of competition but will impact their life and those close to them and in any number of ways.
L4L is a great environment for athletes to learn and develop the mental skills needed. It is inevitable that “life will get in the way of sports” and having those transferable life skills in your life will help meet these challenges successfully. Imagine spending countless hours in the weight room, on the practice field, the ice or courts in pursuit of a dream only to throw it all away with one senseless and careless act. The choice is yours…as it always is!
Coaches know that physical skill is only one essential quality of picking players. It’s those immeasurable qualities or intangibles that makes a player invaluable to a team or program. Leaders 4 Life will prove to be a powerful resource in this all-important process.
TO PARENTS
We have never felt that one week of leadership training at L4L is the end of our commitment to our athletes or parents, in fact we hope it’s just the beginning. We are always accessible to help in any capacity. In the past, we have acted as an important link for coaches, educators and business leaders in providing useful information with regard to our athlete’s character and leadership qualities. We are proud to promote the accomplishments of our athletes.
In addition, the feedback from our parents has been much appreciated. To see our program have such an impact with its athletes and parents in such a short period of time has been personally rewarding. To that end, my staff and I look forward to the opportunity of working closely with all the athletes and help launch them in the direction of his or her dreams.
Yours in Leadership,
Dale Dunbar
THINK?
The following questions are used in an exercise at L4L as we discuss the many issues and obstacles that every young athlete will encounter in their life on and off the ice. Regardless of individual skills it would be a costly mistake for anyone to assume athletic ability alone will propel them to the next levels. What separates athletes at this level is personal commitment, character, discipline and leadership!
• As a student-athlete do you feel you are fully prepared both mentally and physically for the challenges and issues you will encounter as you pursue your dreams?
• Do you have the self-confidence to confront peer pressure successfully?
• Are you easily influenced by others just to fit in?
• Do you understand the importance of education, now and in the future?
• Do you surround your self with good people?
• Are you aware of the negative consequences of Drugs and Alcohol?
• Have you put yourself in compromising situations thinking nothing will happen?
• Do you understand the complexities of relationships?
